Anita Palmer Hackley

Anita Palmer Hackley, age 71, died January 6, 2017 at Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. 

Anita was born on July 29, 1945 in Altus, Oklahoma to the late Wallace William Smith and Lottie Ann (Provence) Smith. She married Johnny T. Palmer on January 1, 1997 at the 4P Bar Ranch East of Megargel, Texas. He preceded her in death on October 12, 2008. She later married John Hackley on August 17, 2013 in Jacksboro, Texas where they made their home. 

Anita was a retired educator and a great artist. She had served as president of the Olney Retired Teachers, vice-president of District IX Retired Teachers, and served on the Texas Teacher Retirement System Board of Directors. She also served as president of the Hamilton Hospital Foundation and Consumer Member of Texas State Board of Vocational Nursing. She was very instrumental in building and maintaining Anita’s House in Olney. Anita was a Special Selected Member of Women Artists of the West, the National Association of Oil and Acrylic Painters, and the American Association of Equine Artists. She was a director of Faith Community Hospital Foundation of Jacksboro and an active member of The Parish of Jacksboro. 

Anita was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Johnny T. Palmer, a daughter, Babe Portwood, and by one nephew. 

Anita is survived by her husband, John Hackley of Jacksboro, Texas; three sons, Scott Palmer and family of Olney, Texas, Mike Palmer and family of Megargel, Texas and John Brentnall Hackley and family of Jacksboro, Texas; one daughter, Mary Kay Hackley of Austin, Texas; a brother, Troy Gene Smith and family of Pawnee, Oklahoma; a sister, Mary Perry and family of Enid Oklahoma; son-in-law, Harley Portwood and family of Round Timber, Texas; two nieces and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Megargel Cemetery in Megargel, Texas with Rev. Dr. Suzanne Castle, pastor at The Parish in Jacksboro, Texas, officiating.  Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
